A very summery blog!

Summer, movement and everything in between

Summer changes our pace. The heat weighs on us, the air is heavy, and sometimes every movement feels like a challenge. And it's not just a matter of mood – there's a real physiological reason behind these feelings.

When temperatures rise, the body switches on its cooling mechanisms: sweating, widening blood vessels, and sending resources to heat-releasing organs such as the skin. The price? Less blood flow to the muscles and brain, a drop in blood pressure, tiredness or irritability, difficulty concentrating and a tendency to avoid physical effort. But this is exactly where – just as we like it – movement comes into the picture.

Let's put it on the table: sweating isn't necessarily a bad thing

Moving in summer isn't about "burning calories" – it's about giving the body back what was taken from it: a sense of control, vitality, breath. When we move slowly, precisely and mindfully, as in yoga or Pilates, we work the body gently without creating unnecessary stress. Practice also improves blood flow, helps clear metabolic waste (what our cells no longer need) and even puts a smile on our face thanks to endorphins – natural painkillers and mood boosters! The sweat, in this case, is part of the process – and the sooner we accept it, the better! Just make sure you drink enough throughout the day, because on hot days we sweat more to cool down, and lose more fluids as a result.

Moving in summer – but wisely

In summer we're more likely to activate the sympathetic nervous system, the one responsible for "fight or flight". Intense workouts can add to the load. Practices like Pilates and yoga, on the other hand, which encourage deep breathing, focus and slow muscle activation, activate the parasympathetic system – responsible for calm, digestion, repair and healing.

In other words: gentle movement isn't just "bearable" in summer – it's especially beneficial at this time of year.

And at the studio?

Over the summer we adapt our classes to the season: less load, more flow, emphasis on breathing, inner focus, and care for the back, shoulders and areas that tend to tighten up with the heat and daily routine. Classes take place in our air-conditioned studio (!!!!!!!), in small groups, with personal adjustments for every participant – exactly as suits you.

Made it this far? Convinced to keep moving even when it's hot? Here are five tips for smart summer practice:

  1. Train at comfortable times – early morning or evening. That way we avoid heat stress and let the body work in balance. Luckily, our studio runs classes from 7:30 until 22:00.

  2. Drink water throughout the day, not just during your workout! Dehydration affects the muscles, joints and brain. Regular drinking gives the body the support it needs.

  3. Prefer slow, mindful movement over intense workouts – it's a matter of choice. By choosing slow, focused workouts we activate the relaxation system, improve quality blood flow and save energy for the rest of the day. Feeling extra energetic? Find an air-conditioned space and go for a fast HIIT session!

  4. Choose a ventilated, shaded or air-conditioned space – at the studio and in everyday movement. That lets the body release heat effectively through evaporating sweat, so you can practise without overloading.

  5. Listen to your body – we won't feel the same every day. If you're tired or drained, choose a gentle practice. If your energy is high, go deeper or choose an intense workout. The main thing is to keep moving.

Summer doesn't have to put us on pause. It can actually be a great time to connect inward, slow down and listen to what the body really needs. So see you at the studio – with cold water on the side, steady breath and attention to our body, in any weather.
