On the move

On the move

Life takes us to different places, and our body responds accordingly – whether it's growing up, maturing and ageing; creating new life and the changes our body goes through to nourish the new little being with us; the professional paths we choose to take; or simply getting injured along the way.

This month we'll dive into the benefits of training for different groups of people, and highlight how our classes can help seniors, pregnant and postpartum women, athletes, and people recovering from injuries.

On the move

Seniors

As the years go by, our body goes through many changes. We may experience a decline in flexibility, strength and endurance. For our older community, staying active is the key to maintaining mobility, strength and independence. Pilates and yoga are two wonderful ways to keep body and mind healthy in later life. Regular practice strengthens muscles and bones, improves posture, helps reduce pain and increases balance and self-confidence.

On top of that, the social side of our classes offers a sense of community and connection that matter so much as we get older.

Pregnancy and postpartum

Pregnancy and birth are special, exciting times in a woman's life, as she creates new life out of nothing. Staying active during this time can lead to a smoother birth and a faster recovery afterwards. Pilates and yoga are especially recommended for pregnant and postpartum women – a wonderful way to keep the body healthy, ease the changes the body goes through during pregnancy, strengthen the pelvic floor, relieve back pain and support a faster recovery after birth.

Athletes

Athletes often push their bodies to the limit, which can lead to imbalances and injuries. Only in recent years have we seen a shift in how athletes think about training. In the past they mainly strengthened the muscles relevant to their sport, without paying attention to muscle length, flexibility or core strength – all of which protect the body from injury. Today things are different, and athletes look for ways to take care of their bodies while training in their sport.

Pilates and yoga complement athletic training by focusing on the core, flexibility and body awareness, helping improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.

Injuries

Injuries can be frustrating, and it's easy to think an injury means putting fitness on hold – but it doesn't have to. For people recovering from injuries, Pilates can be a rehabilitative form of training, focusing on gentle movements and modifications to help rebuild strength, flexibility and confidence in our body. All our instructors are trained to work with people with a variety of injuries, so everyone can take part and benefit from our classes.
